“Pick any Saturday afternoon, during the 80s,
You would find me performing the same ritual-
First, I would assume position, in my personal place of worship, AKA the living room carpet.
The technical and well-honed position was of such – spread eagled, on my belly. pencil in hand, poised over a pile of paper.
…..With everything in place I was ready to follow my guru’s lead.
Would I anticipate his thoughts correctly and start in the right position? Or would I go off the edge of the paper(the worst of sins?) ‘Can you guess what it is yet?’ Rolf proclaimed. |
|
I could - now. It was Porky Pig wearing a huge chef’s hat. Rolf started the picture in the top left corner of the page…I had started drawing in the middle.
‘Quick, get a new piece, start again, I need to catch up. The discarded piece of paper could be used in one of my sculptural pieces later in the day - once I’d perfected cartoon.’
A quarter of a century later and Rolf’s Cartoon Time is still a fond memory (as is the full superman costume made from paper, Sellotape, felt tips and poster paints I made that night).
As a kid I’d always be drawing, painting or making something.
As a ‘grown-up’ – not a lot’s changed. |
|
For me, all the varied and wondrous aspects of art and design aren’t (and needn’t/shouldn’t be treated as) separate entities, they all interlink.
I have always had a burning desire to create but dedicating my time to one thing was never enough so I – drew, painted, made films, DJed, produced music, made sculptures, animated, graffitied, studied Fine Art, studied Graphic Design, directed, took photographs……
Painting is my first love but it’s all these other influences which come together to influence the way I paint.
I hope you like what I do a fraction as much as I like doing it.” |
