Chop & Change Portraits   'Shamrock & Twistle' (2008) - The process from start to finish

Maybe you have a photo of a special moment but there is something in the background which spoils the image or there are certain parts you would like to remove.

You may have several photographs with elements you like in each that you wish to combine.

All this is made possible with this bespoke portrait service.

I listen to what you want and then create a digital image, from your photos. I then convert this image into a beautiful painting that you can treasure forever or give as a special gift.

You can also have the digital image I create professionally printed onto a range of materials such as high quality canvas or opaque acrylic.

To the right is a case study of a recent painting which shows step-by-step the process of creating it.

This was a private piece I did as a present for my mum.   She wanted a portrait of my brother and me and this was one of her favourite recent photos of us, though she only wanted us as the subjects.

She wanted the painting a specific size so I set up my digital workspace to those dimensions then arranged the cut-out images so it worked as a composition.

I then desaturated the subjects and added a coloured background to bring them out.   This was to act as the basis for the painting as black white gives strong contrasts of light and dark.   I would then add washes of colour and highlights on top.

I first worked the painting up, as in the mock-up, with no colour on the subjects, concentrating on the strong plays of light and dark.
The washes of colour were applied along with a subtle use of metallic paints so the painting caught the light in a variety of ways.  The final highlights were added and the painting came to life.
