Icon Portraits   'The Rat Pack' (2008) - The process from start to finish

We all have people we admire, respect and aspire to from past and present - icons.

Our icons are often depicted in art and photography and these images are often a popular choice for modern interior decoration.

But why settle for a mass-produced image that you try and fit in with your interior setting?

I will take your desired icon and produce a bespoke piece that will be expertly tailored to your tastes and will fit in perfectly with its surroundings.

Any request is welcome however niche or specialised you may think it is.   I guarantee to produce something that exceeds your expectations.

"I had heard Matt was a reputable artist but I never realised he could capture such a genre and bring it back to life with such a modern twist. Truly sensational, The Rat Pack would be proud!"

Paul Morris, Leeds (owner of 'The Rat Pack')

I was approached by a client, Paul Morris, in April 2008 who wanted a painting of the notorious group of entertainers from the sixties, 'The Rat Pack' for his new home.   After an initial conversation I asked him to send me a photo of where he wanted the painting to go.   He did so by picture message from his phone.

I then began researching 'The Rat Pack' historically and visually.   I felt there were 4 main players in the Rat Pack; Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jnr, Dean Martin & Peter Lawford and after consulting with Paul it was agreed these were the four.

I sifted through various images I had collected and played with different ideas of how best to depict these icons while at the same time enhancing the décor of where they were to be hung.

I presented Paul with several digtal mock-ups. He loved the concept depicted left.

I also produced a digital render of how they would look in situ (to make sure he was 100% happy with the design before brush touched canvas). It was at this point we decided to bring in some subtle sepia tones to tie in with the sofa.
Throughout the painting process I kept Paul up to date with the progress of the work visually through emailed photos.   The final approval check came when he saw the finished paintings in life and he was delighted with his home's new centrepiece.
